1 cup Chana dal

Step1
Wash and then soak the chana dal for 4 hours in water. Drain off water and put the dal into a pressure cooker. Add 2 cup water, ½ tsp turmeric powder and 1 tsp salt (or to taste). Pressure cook on high heat for 1 whistle, then lower heat and cook for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and when the pressure is released naturally open the cooker and add 1 tsp lal garam masala, mix well and keep aside covered.

Step2
Heat 1 Tbs ghee in a karahi on medium low. Add ½ tsp cumin seed, 1 pinch asafetida powder, 1 tsp ginger paste, 2 green chili (chopped fine) and sauté for 1 minute. Add 200g tomato (chopped fine) and ½ tsp red chili powder. Mix well and cook till the ghee separates. Raise heat to full and slowly pour out the contents of the pressure cooker into the karahi. Add ½ cup or more of water, if required. Mix the karahi contents well and cook covered for 1 minute. Add 1 tsp lal garam masala and 2 green chili (whole, slit) and some coriander leaf (chopped fine), mix well and cook for 4 minutes over low heat. Serve dal with a dash of ghee over it. Tastes delicious with roti, paratha, naan or rice.
